Internal linking strategy: choose relevant donors and measure the result

Build an internal linking strategy around relevant donor pages, descriptive anchors, and fixed target metrics instead of sitewide link-count targets.

An internal linking strategy is a plan for helping people and crawlers move between genuinely related pages. It is not a target number of links pasted into every footer. The strongest internal link appears where the linked page is the useful next step for the reader, uses accurate anchor text, and connects two pages that share a topic or decision.

For a blog, begin with the destination page rather than the donor list. Define the question it answers and the related pages that already earn attention or explain an adjacent step. Then add a small number of in-body links where the connection is editorially obvious. This keeps a hub useful instead of turning it into a link farm.

Choose targets with a reason

A target may be a new pillar that needs clear discovery paths, a useful guide that is stuck behind stronger siblings, or an established page that people reach after a diagnostic. Avoid linking merely because a URL is new. The target should deserve the visit and have a stable canonical destination before it receives more internal attention.

Find relevant donor pages

  • Prefer pages that discuss the same problem, audience, or next decision.
  • Use established pages whose readers would plausibly benefit from the destination; traffic alone is not relevance.
  • Place the link in a sentence that explains why the reader should follow it.
  • Keep the anchor descriptive and natural. Do not repeat an exact keyword mechanically across unrelated pages.

For example, a guide about Google Search Console diagnostics can link to a blog-traffic pillar when the reader needs the wider operating plan. A guide about SEO KPIs can link to that same pillar when the reader needs to turn reporting into action. Those are different contexts that lead to the same useful next step.

Validate the technical path

Before shipment, confirm that every donor and target returns an intended final URL, that the target declares its self-canonical, and that navigation and the sitemap can discover the page. Google's Search Essentials explain that links should be crawlable and that sites should make important resources accessible to Google. These checks make the treatment observable; they do not guarantee a ranking gain.

Measure a link treatment honestly

Preregister the donor pages, target page, anchors, and a matched untreated control where possible. Keep title/meta and body-intent changes off the treated established target in the same decision window. At the end of a settled window, compare target impressions, clicks, and average position to the baseline and control. If the target declines in position, the guardrail matters even if a broader site metric rises.

Internal links help explain a site's information architecture, but they are not a substitute for a page that answers the query. Use them to connect an intent-distinct cluster, then read Search Console to see whether people actually see and choose the target pages.
