Google Search Console optimization: choose the right fix from the data

Use clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position in Google Search Console to diagnose what to change without guessing or stacking conflicting SEO treatments.

Google Search Console optimization is not one tactic. It is the discipline of reading a page's search pattern before deciding whether the constraint is visibility, ranking, listing appeal, technical eligibility, or the page's answer. The right action for a page with high impressions and weak CTR is usually not the right action for a page with no impressions.

Start with a complete date range and filter to the exact canonical URL or path. Search Console's Performance report provides clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position; use them together. Average position is lower-is-better, and a broader query mix can change an aggregate, so do not make a decision from one number alone.

Google's guide to the Performance report

Pattern: impressions are high, CTR is low

The page is being shown but people are not choosing it often enough. Inspect the queries and the search result that the page presents. If the page is established and its dominant intent is clear, test a title and meta-description rewrite only. Preserve the body and internal-link treatment during the window so the click result has a readable explanation.

Pattern: queries rank on page two

A page that appears for relevant terms around the second page may have a relevance, depth, or authority problem. Read the actual query and the page's opening before editing. If the page answers a different question, an on-page intent treatment can make the H1, opening, structure, and substantive answer more direct. If the answer is already right but related established pages never point to it, a focused internal-link treatment may be more appropriate.

Pattern: a page or query loses impressions

Do not immediately rewrite the copy. Compare date ranges, then separate the possible movements: fewer impressions, worse average position, lower CTR at stable impressions, a canonical or indexing change, a seasonal query mix, or a measurement change. Check the URL Inspection and indexing reports before treating a decline as an editorial failure.

Pattern: a new page has no data

First validate eligibility: the public URL should return 200, declare the intended canonical, allow indexing, render its H1, and appear in the sitemap and relevant navigation. That proves the page can be found; it does not prove demand. Do not keep issuing variations of the same page while waiting. Hold the fixed URL set long enough to observe discovery and reward.

Make the next action falsifiable

Write the action down before you change the page: which URL, which treatment class, which metric, and which window. A useful prediction includes a threshold and a guardrail, such as more clicks without an established URL losing average position. After the window settles, record the outcome even when it misses. A clean miss is more useful than a dashboard full of overlapping edits.
